Longwatch Productivity Solutions: The Eyes Have It

    • Do you ever spend a lot of time studying trend charts and alarm logs, trying to figure out “what happened?”
    • Does one shift perform better than another on certain parts of your production process?
    • Have you ever had to be in two places at once, and missed something you wish you could have seen?
    • Does your HMI have more than one display that the operator can select?  Does it have windowing capability?

Longwatch MonitorThese are questions that face us every day.  Fortunately, Longwatch has developed an “elegantly simple” solution that addresses these issues.  With the Longwatch Console Recorder, the HMI image and any mouse movements are recorded as video.  And, with Longwatch, this video is linked to your manufacturing data.  For example, when you want to see what the operator was looking at when an alarm occurred in a particular batch, you can click on the alarm and Longwatch will automatically find the video associated with that batch and operator station so you can play back and SEE exactly what was happening.

The benefits include: saving time when troubleshooting, helping address quality issues before they become expensive to fix, helping train the operators to do their jobs more effectively and efficiently, and even documenting the process for regulatory or reporting purposes.

Longwatch OperatorThe Longwatch Console Recorder is a very affordable software solution that can retrofit onto many different brands of HMI, SCADA and DCS systems.  Because it uses proven, distributed system technology and industry standard software, it integrates with your system with minimal overhead and maximum supportability and scalability.

The Console Recorder platform can be expanded at any time to support video input from cameras, giving you “virtual operators and technicians.”  This is an inexpensive way to augment your supervision of your operation, place “eyes” in areas that are unfit for humans, reduce operating costs, and improve safety.  Because Longwatch can use your existing network infrastructure, there are no “blind spots” no matter how spread out your operation is.  And its “video snippet” technology can reduce false alarms and reduce downtime.

ACP Thin Client TechonolgyMulti Monitor Thin Client from ACP and Arista Supports Dual Displays

Allows Session Spanning and Multiple Sessions on the Same Client

Automation Control Products (ACP) in conjunction with Arista Corporation is proud to announce the availability of a new multi-monitor office grade Thin AristaClient, the AP-3300.  What really sets this unit apart from other dual monitor Thin Clients is the fact that the user can display one or more different sessions on each monitor.

"This is the first ThinManager Ready office grade Thin Client that supports two monitors," said Tim Caine, CTO for Automation Control Products.  "Customers have been using multi-monitor industrial grade Thin Clients, such as BoxPC-240A, but sometimes they don't need the ruggedness found in the industrial units."  The 240A, also from Arista, supports up to five monitors and is rated up to 122 degrees F.  Like the AP-3300 it has the ability to span a single session across monitors, display a different session on each monitor, or present a combination of the two.  Both Arista units support touch screens on each display and can drive monitors at different resolutions.

AP-3300"The initial response to this product has been tremendous among customers who want to split a single session among multiple displays," Mr. Caine said.  ACP's ThinManager already provides the easiest method for configuring Thin Client hardware - with this new Arista multi-monitor hardware the user can bring more value to his existing software licenses.

The configuration wizards in ThinManager allow the user to easily identify the logical screen configuration, the sessions running on each screen, the screen resolutions and how spanned sessions are displayed.  The session to monitor mapping can also be modified directly from the Thin Client itself.

The Arista AP-330 has VGA DVI in clone mode or dual monitor mode (one VGA monitor and one DVI monitor), 4 USB ports, and supports a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1440 at 16M colors.

Arista Corporation Announces the Integration of Intel's ATOM Processor to Enhance Low Power Industrial Applications

Arista Corporation announced they have integrated the Intel ATOM processor into two of their popular industrial computer products.  Introducing the ATOM Based ARP-3600AP - B00 series and ATOM Based MicroBox-7824A-B00

The ARP-3600AP industrial computer is a fanless HMI panel mount that offers the highest cost-to-feature ratio in the industry. Packed with industry leading design features, these ruggedized units operate from  0° to 50° C (32~122F), employ optional NEMA 4/4X bezel attributes and  are equipped with dual Ethernet ports (10/100 &1 Gigabit),  optional 2.5" HDD, optional CF, one Mini PCI-Express expansion slot, Four USB 2.0 ports, one serial COM port and 5-wire resistive touch screen standard.  With LCD display options of 6.4'', 8.4'', 10.4'', 12.1'' and 15'' LCD displays, the ARP-3600AP will be a fit for most HMI panel computer applications.

The MicroBox 7824A features an all metal wall mountable chassis, designed for rugged industrial applications.  The chassis is equipped with an advanced convection cooling system that allows for a fanless design. The MicroBox-7824A industrial computer was originally announced by Arista in February 2008 at the ACP (Industrial Thin Client) Users Conference in Scottsdale Arizona. The MicroBox-7824A received a positive reception from industry leaders, engineering professionals and a diverse group of ACP ThinManager users. The MicroBox system shares many of the feature attributes of the ARP-3600AP boasting five USB 2.0 ports and AC or DC power inputs.

Both the ARP-3600AP and the MicroBox-7824A were originally powered by a smaller processor that limited the units to running WinCE. With today's industrial automation software becoming more sophisticated and requiring a larger operating system platform, such as WinXP Pro, the Intel ATOM processor is a perfect fit for running low power industrial applications while having plenty of power to operate the larger O/S.

The designated part numbers for these units with the ATOM processors will be ARP-3600AP-B00 and MicroBox-7824A-B00. The company is planning to have these systems with the processor upgrade, re-certified as ThinManager enabled, in-keeping with their partner relationship with ACP.

Lesia's Q&A CornerAsk the Infrastructure Experts: Lesia's Q&A Corner

Did You Know Full Size ISA and PCI Slots are Still Available?

I worked on a project last month that challenged me with finding a rack mountable computer that still offered ISA slots.  It is very apparent this is yesterday’s technology but believe-it-or-not, many industrial consumers are not ready (or able) to upgrade their older, ISA compatible devices.  At first, I thought I was stuck and was quite concerned about what I was going to do for this customer.  After all, it was a very large project, and InSource designed the entire application.  I did not give up and I searched my resources.  I did find out that HP still offers ISA options as a custom build which is rather expensive.  Being a person who shares information freely, I was expressing my challenges to a colleague who said, “Lesia, what about Advantech?!  They are very aware that the industrial market still has a need for ISA solutions and still offer rack mountable and shoebox systems with ISA.”  A huge weight lifted from me that afternoon!

Industrial vendors, such as Advantech and Arista, still offer high-speed, rack mountable and shoebox computers that offer ISA slots.  Both Advantech and Arista understand that there are devices out there that are not quite in line with the new technology of PCI/PCIe, therefore having this option keeps industrial applications up-to-date and running.  Some examples of these options are:

Advantech’s ACP-4000 series, IPC-610, and IPC-6000 series

Arista’s RS-100AT, RS-291-865-2U, RS-410-865-4U, RS-500-865-4U, and RS-700-865-4U

InSource Solutions is not a company that encourages old technology but we are a company with solutions for today that help with tomorrow.  For that reason, I felt it was important to share this information with our clients so they know even though some of their devices are yesterday’s technology that does not mean we cannot integrate them into tomorrow’s solutions.  If you are hesitating to update your system due to older devices, please know InSource has answers and upgrades that can happen for your application.  All you have to do is ask!
