The Elledge FamilyInSource Solutions Employee Spotlight

InSource would like to introduce you to Manufacturing Consultant, Blane Elledge.  Blane works out of our Memphis location assisting customers with presales and development.  Blane earned BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Memphis.  Previously, Blane was with Softcell, another Wonderware distributor.  When InSource acquired Softcell in 2003, Blane made the change, as well.  He has been working with Wonderware for 19 years.

Blane grew up in Tennessee in both Memphis and Nashville.  He currently resides “out in the country outside Memphis, TN” with his family: wife of 25 years, Karen; and children Taylor (16) and Alex (12).  Karen and Blane met while they were working together at a mall.  They also share their home with Tyson and JJ, their dogs, 10 chickens and soon will add pigmy goats to the family.  Blane says he enjoys working at InSource because it “is a large professional software vendor but still has a small family oriented company work culture that welcomes employee input.”

Here are some more interesting facts about Blane.

    • Blane loves being a coach and says that one of his greatest accomplishments is when “parents tell me that their child would not be where they are in sports if it were not for my coaching.”
    • One of Blane’s favorite hobbies, that might surprise you, is Ballroom Dancing.
    • When Blane was a kid he always dreamed of being a teacher or coach.
    • Blane would love to visit Europe on a dream vacation.
    • Blane’s hero: Karen, his wife.  Blane says, “I consider myself to be a motivator but it takes a lot of effort and brute force but my wife seems to pursue people to doing the right thing but manages to never offend anyone and makes it look effortless.”

InSource is excited and proud to have Blane as a key team member!

Lesia's Q&A CornerAsk the Infrastructure Experts: Lesia's Q & A Corner

ACP’s Mirror License versus Redundant License.  Why are they Different?

Mirrored versus Redundant?  That seemed to be the #1 question last month.  What is mirrored versus redundant when talking about an ACP license?  Is one better than the other?  Why is a mirrored license cheaper than an redundant license?  All good questions with very valid answers.

A mirrored license allows two ThinManager Servers to be synchronized with the same configuration so the thin client can receive the configurations from the second (backup) server if the first server goes down.  A mirrored license is less expensive than a redundant license because there is only one Graphical User Interface (GUI)  that connects to your primary ThinManager Server; it does not allow changes to be made to the configuration except from the primary ThinManager Server.  If the primary ThinManager Server fails, the thin client can boot from the second ThinManager Server but the configurations cannot be changed until the primary ThinManager Server is back in service.

A redundant license has “full redundancy” meaning there is a GUI connected to both servers.  Redundant licensing requires an identical license set on both ThinManager Servers.  Each ThinManager Server is fully functional and can be used to change or configure a thin client.  Like mirrored, this is a dual server system, but with two full licenses, which explains why redundant is more expensive.  The ThinManager Servers are synchronized with the same configurations so the thin client can be set up to point to either server for configurations; therefore,  if the primary ThinManager Server fails the thin client will reboot and connect to the secondary ThinManager Server (backup), receive the proper configuration, and connect to the proper terminal server.  Changes and configurations made while the primary server is down will be saved.

As for knowing which license is right for you, InSource is here to assist you.  If you know have many configurations and changes throughout your day then you may want to consider a redundant license rather than upgrading later, which could cost you more.  If your configurations and changes are very minimal the mirrored license may be the better way to go.

For more information, or If you have any questions about mirrored or redundant licensing, or ACP please contact me, Lesia Bell your Infrastructure Specialist.  I would be happy to assist you!
