Katie and Randy SchauerInSource Solutions Employee Spotlight.  Meet Katie Schauer, Marketing Specialist!

InSource Solutions is excited to introduce Katie Schauer, Marketing Specialist.  Katie officially joined the InSource family in November.  You might already know Katie as she has been working with InSource since June as the temporary Marketing Assistant.

Katie earned her BA in Communication at Goucher College and comes to InSource most recently from text book publishing.  Katie says that she enjoys “working in a challenging yet supportive environment where we communicate with our customers on a daily basis.”  She really enjoys hosting the bi-weekly webinars because she “interacts with customers and learns more about them and their businesses.”

Katie is a native of Baltimore, MD.  She has been married to her high school sweetheart, Randy since 2002.  Katie and Randy have an 18 month old son, Mitch, and a 2 year old black lab, Dylan.  The Schauer family resides in a suburb of Baltimore City, although, Katie admits that she’ll always be a city girl at heart.

Katie and son, MitchSome other interesting facts about Katie:

·          Katie and Randy met on their first day of Kindergarten.  They have always been friends and began dating their Senior year of High School.

·          Katie loves to read, especially to Mitch.  Favorites (of the moment) include anything by Mo Willems and any book involving busses.

·          When she was little, Katie wanted to be an astronaut; she even went to Space Camp when she was 11.

·          If she could have any super power, Katie says, “I would like to be able to hear thoughts, but just those of my son and dog…I can’t imagine what goes through their minds in a day.”

InSource is happy to have Katie as part of the team!

Wonderware OpsManage’09 delivers insights for sustainable success

The Invensys vision for bringing more value to customers became reality at OpsManage’09, as customers and ecosystem partners were able to preview a range of new products and solutions that will be available from Wonderware in the near future.  Attendees were inspired by keynote speaker David Haft, Group Vice President, Sustainability & Productivity for Frito Lay North America, who shared highlights of Frito Lay’s ten year journey to becoming one of the world’s preeminent ‘green’ companies, benefiting both the environment and their business.  Attendees were then able to engage with industry and product specialists from Invensys and partners to explore solutions for their own organization.  Two new products previewed at the conference are key enablers to sustainable success, Wonderware Industry Application for Corporate Energy Management and Wonderware Intelligence.  General availability dates and details will be announced soon.

Wonderware Industry Application for Corporate Energy Management

Jumpstart your sustainability initiative with visibility into energy usage in the context of your operation.  Organizations can allocate energy costs to departments, product lines, and production orders and provide reports in financial terms..  This configurable application leverages system platform and provides a blueprint for energy usage awareness and notification of events, delivering a quick return on investment through reduced energy consumption.

Wonderware Intelligence

Wonderware Intelligence software transforms data and information from multiple sources into manufacturing intelligence by aggregating process and production data in real time and adding contextual elements, such as energy consumption, equipment, product, work orders, material and personnel. This information context enables end users to gain insights into the root causes of problems and understand how production events are related in order to enable corrective or pre-emptive actions.

Lesia's Q&A CornerAsk the Infrastructure Specialists: Lesia’s Q & A Corner

Understanding Fault Tolerance

Once your business has the correct application solution, the next step is selecting the correct hardware platform to support that application.  In server selection, availability is the most important consideration.  For applications where availability is a high priority and retaining data is a must, a fault-tolerant server is the best selection.

A fault-tolerant server is one that is designed to survive any single fault and many cases of multiple faults without any service interruption or loss of data/work in process. A failure should in all cases be completely transparent to the user.  Fault-tolerant servers have been measured in the field to have average time between failure that are orders of magnitude – up to a hundred times or more – longer than those experienced by standard high-availability servers.  Fault-tolerant servers experience availabilities of more than five 9s. They will be up more than 99.999% of the time which translates into less than five minutes per year of downtime.

These severs are often described as providing continuous availability because they are designed to preempt downtime.  This approach has provided comprehensive components and functional redundancy within the footprint of a single server.  If one of the server’s components fails, the server continues to process normally.  The redundancy ensures the users do not experience any disruption, no transactions or data are lost, and there is no degradation in server performance.  Unlike a high availability server which only offers 99.9% (three 9s) of uptime with an average of eight hours of downtime a year with possible costly data loss.

The ftServer line by Stratus Technologies automatically enable RAS (reliability, availability & serviceability) to the fullest extent possible.  Replicated components, system software reliability features, and online service features combine to support uninterrupted uptime that has been proven to meet or exceed five 9s.  Applications benefit from the servers’ fault-tolerant capabilities from the time you load them on the system without any software application changes or special configurations.

Current fault-tolerant servers eliminate drawbacks associated with older, proprietary systems.  By using a standard Microsoft Windows operating system and off-the-shelf hardware components including Intel Processors,  Stratus can offer the ftServer line at a very competitive price.    Their single-system design permits lower software license costs compared with clusters because a single server does not require multiple copies of the same software and companies can potentially eliminate the need to move to Enterprise Versions of popular programs and databases

The ftServer series keeps the total cost of ownership low as well.  They are maintained like ordinary, standalone Windows servers, but with self-monitoring capabilities, remote troubleshooting, and true hot-swap components all built in.  These systems do not miss a beat in the face of component failures and system software faults that cause other servers to crash.  Their combination of remote-access serviceability and automatic problem reporting allows service engineers to resolve issues online in more than 95% of cases.  And when needed, ftServers system can automatically order their own hot-swappable replacements parts, which are typically delivered within 24 hours.

With the understanding of fault-tolerance and needing a system with 24/7 availability, you may think twice about what high availability really means to you and your business.

Advantech’s Fanless Box PC’s Updated with SATA Support

The Industrial Automation Group of Advantech has upgraded their high performance Fanless Box PCs (UNO-2170, 2171, & 2176 series) and the PCI-based Fanless Box PCs (UNO-3072 and UNO-3074 series) to support the SATA interface. Compared to the older PATA communication interface, SATA supports faster data transmissions and provides more reliable serial communications.

Advantech’s Fanless Box PCs feature a robust design with power isolation and thermal resistant solutions. This is achieved through special power circuits that keep the system ground apart from the chassis ground, enhancing isolation from external electrical interference and also providing higher system reliability. Advantech’s Fanless Box PCs are designed with strict thermal testing criteria which ensure the system will operate at a stable temperature, even when the CPU is under 100% load.
