Photo Courtesy of Florida Power and LightPresident Barack Obama a Wonderware user?

On Tuesday October 27th, 2009  President Barack Obama joined  Florida Power and Light  for  the commissioning of the nation's largest solar PV power plant.

So how does this make the President a Wonderware user?  Well, instead of flipping a switch to commission the site, he clicked an InTouch window!

At this site, located in the small rural town of Arcadia, FL, Wonderware software is providing real-time process visualization, supervisory control and analytics for the nation’s largest solar farm (90 thousand panels, 26 megawatts)  This state-of-the-art solution was implemented by Wonderware Systems Integration partner, AMEC of Tallahassee, FL.

Arcadia is best know for it’s citrus trees and cattle and was devastated by Hurricane Charley in 2004.

After a tour of the Arcadia plant, the President announced $3.4 billion in spending projects to modernize the nation's electric power system. The so-called "smart grid" funding is slated to create tens of thousands of jobs in the "near term" and lay the groundwork for changing how Americans use and pay for energy. The spending is aimed at improving the efficiency and reliability of the U.S. power supply and to help create markets for wind and solar power.  Additionally, the plan would create "smart meters" to help consumers use electricity when demand is low and when rates are cheaper.

In keeping with Wonderware’s tradition of being on the leading edge of technology, Wonderware will announce it’s Corporate Energy Management Industry Application at OpsManage ’09 next week in Anaheim, CA.  Stay tuned for more information…

ARP-5500AX Series Product

Arista CorporationsARP-5500AX Series is a NEMA 4X stainless steel fully sealed and completely water proof (IP65) industrial computer with integrated 15-inch, 17-inch, and 19-inch TFT LCDs. This series has a resistive touch screen that allows operation with gloved hands. The ARP-5500AX Series supports two standard configurations: 1.5GHz VIA C7 low power processor, 1GB of memory or the high performance Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile Processor, 2GB of memory. Both of these standard configurations come with a 160 GB Hard Drive, one USB port, two serial ports, and two 10/100/1000 LAN ports. This series is available with AC or DC24V power input options and operates from 0oC to 50oC. One of the key features of ARP-5500AX Series is that it supports multiple mounting options, such as bench top, wall mount, pedestal mount, ceiling, and VESA mount. This feature greatly improves mounting and installation flexibility.
Arista Nema 4X
The ARP-5500AX Series is compliant with IP65 protective standard as it completely supports water proof. Therefore, this series is an ideal solution for rural and industrial environments which experience constant exposure to moisture and dirt and in environments where hygiene is important. This series can handle hose down requirements and is resistant to most chemicals used during cleaning in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The design of ARP-5500AX Series helps cleaning quicker and easier and thus prevents food waste build up. The ARP-5500AX Series is a space-saving stand-alone industrial computer which can be flexibly integrated into a number of industrial applications, such as Food Processing, Pharmaceutical, Chemical, and Wastewater industries.

The ARP-5500AX Series is also incorporated thin client technology into its design. Arista offers ARP-5500AX industrial computer together with ACP ThinManager. ACP ThinManager provides for instantaneous, automatic fail over to any available backup server if the client detects problems with the primary server. ACP Enabled ARP-5500AX can support industrial specific I/O (even very high speed serial data) and user devices. ThinManager has an automatic configuration option for any new ACP Enable ARP-5500AX clients added to the network. With ACP ThinManager Suite, advanced thin client management software, it makes ARP-5500AX ideal fail-save equipment for HMI/SCADA applications on the plant floor.

Arista Nema 4XFood Processing and Pharmaceutical Industries
In quality food and pharmaceutical processing, producers follow a strict code of Good Manufacturing Practices, insuring cleanliness, product quality, safety, and trace ability. Even the smallest contamination from dust or germs could shut down the whole production process. The ARP-5500AX Series is a NEMA 4X stainless steel fully sealed touch screen industrial computer, which meets particular hygiene requirements of the food production and pharmaceutical industry. The units have a smooth and fully sealed stainless steel enclosure hence preventing collection of germs. Most importantly, they are completely sealed according to NEMA 4X standard, and it is capable to handle hose down with water, fluids splash (such as blood, and fat) and cleaning materials under high pressure.

Chemical and Wastewater Industries
ARP-5500AX Series fully sealed enclosure is made of SUS304 stainless steel material which offers excellent chemical and corrosion resistance and it makes ARP-5500AX Series perfect for petroleum refining, chemical industries and wastewater treatment where chemical compound are extensively used. ARP-5500AX Series enclosure is fully sealed through gasket which prevents chemical gas flowing into the unit causing electronic components damage.

Lesia's Q&A CornerAsk the Infrastructure Experts: Lesia’s I2 Q&A Corner

Minimizing Transmission of H1N1 on the Plant Floor

As awareness and panic spreads in response to the Swine Flu (H1N1) pandemic; awareness of our environments and cleanliness also becomes a hot topic.  Currently the news weighs heavily on schools & medical environments but what about manufacturing environments?  How are food manufacturers dealing with this threat?  How are infectious diseases being limited in these areas?

First, let’s look at the areas in which bacteria has most opportunity to live and grow.  The most common area is work stations where there are multiple users.  The most commonly known way to spread germs is by not washing your hands; the dirtiest things at a work station are keyboards and mice.  Standard keyboards and mice have open gaps around the keys and cracks in seams where fluids and dirt can collect and build over time and cannot be completely disinfected.  Germs can get trapped under the keys and in the cracks making it impossible to wash with liquid cleaners or reach them with a scrubbing tool.  Using liquid disinfectants may kill the surface germs but if the liquids get in the keyboard you are killing more than just the germs, you are destroying the keyboard as well.  Standard keyboards and mice are main collectors and incubators for bacteria.Man and Machine Keyboard

Many keyboard and mice manufactures state their equipment is designed with technologies where there is a built-in antimicrobial protection.  This technology is an added level of protection against damaging microbes such as, bacteria, mold and mildew that can cause stains, odors and product deterioration, but it is not designed to protect users from disease-causing microorganisms, even though some manufacturers of keyboard and mice lead you to believe they do.

One easy and affordable way to limit the spread of infectious bacteria such as H1N1 is byMan and Machine Mice using completely sealed keyboards and mice at these workstations.  Man and Machine offers a complete line of cleanable waterproof keyboards and mice suitable for the Food Manufacturing and Processing Industry.  Their products are IP-68 and EN 60601-1 certified, water and chemical resistant, can be cleaned with 10% bleach, alcohol and chemical disinfections, and 100% Latex free.

There are many Food Manufacturer’s that have invested their money and well being into Man and Machine products even before the threat of the H1N1 virus.  The public can rest assure that this virus and other bacteria are not harvesting in areas where our food is being processed.

If you are using a standard keyboard and mouse at your workstation and would like more information on how to minimized the H1N1 threat and other bacteria please contact our I2 Inside Sales Representative,  Lesia Bell 443.683.8031 | lbell@insourcess.com.  Your well being is as important to us as your business.
