InSource Solutions Employee Spotlight!  Learn More About the People Dedicated to Serving You!

Paula WaddellMeet InSource Solutions Marketing Director, Paula Waddell!

Paula Waddell joined InSource in May 2008.  Paula works in the Baltimore office as the Director of Marketing.  She says she enjoys working at InSource because it “is a great company, with great people, three distinct yet closely intertwined business units that bring amazing solutions to our very diverse client base.”

Paula began her career as a mechanical engineer and has designed things such as the piers at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, Wastewater Treatment Plants, the Monkey House at the Baltimore Zoo.  Paula wanted to stop “sitting behind a computer” and “get out and talk to people”, so she went back to the University of Maryland, for the second time, and earned a BS in Business and Marketing.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Paula has traveled the world and lived in the UK for a brief time.  She loves Baltimore mainly because, “we have four distinct seasons that you don’t get in most areas of the country.”  She conversationally speaks 8 languages and enjoys reading biographies.  Paula has a son, Evan (7 going on 25!), and a wonderful significant other, Chuck, whom she has known for most of her life.

Interesting facts about Paula:

 Paula Waddell and son

  • Besides her career with InSource, Paula owns five Curves for Women workout facilities
  • Paula and Evan spend about six days a week with the various sports Evan plays, including baseball, soccer and tennis
  • Paula loves Home Depot and asked for a table saw for Christmas, just because she didn’t have one
  • Paula dreams to go on a photo safari to Africa, as it’s one of the only places she hasn’t yet visited
  • Paula plays guitar, piano and the clarinet (she says, “don’t get any ideas InSource band members – I’m also shy about playing in front of anyone!”)
  • Paula has a golden retriever named Sandy (aka Sandy-pants, Sanderson, or Sandagator)

Paula enjoys “chatting” with clients to better understand their issues and needs, so feel free to drop her a line at pwaddell@insourcess.com.

Longwatch Version 5.0 Delivers a New Way to Save Time and Money

Longwatch logoWould you rather listen to your favorite sporting event on the radio, or watch it on TV?  And if you were out of the room when a key play happened, would you prefer waiting to see if the game highlight is shown on the 11 o’clock news?  Or would you rather just go back in time and watch your favorite key play right now:  especially so that you can appreciate the context of what’s now happening in the game?

Now, what if you could automatically correlate some of that game video with various statistics of the player involved?  Or if you could list a player’s performance numbers for a particular game, click on one of the numbers and see the video that generated those statistics?

That’s exactly what Longwatch Version 5.0 can do for your plant operations.  Version 5.0 turns cameras into useful sensors and “virtual operators” to help you do a better job of monitoring, responding  to and documenting events and actions in your plant.  With Longwatch, you can reduce costs, save time, improve quality, improve safety, reduce downtime and improve regulatory compliance:  all with the efficiency of video.

Version 5.0 contains a number of enhancements to the core Longwatch System, including support for a wide variety of IP (digital) cameras, on-line DVR playback, and both fixed and variable-length event video clips.  Like the original Longwatch system, Version 5.0 delivers user-friendly video management in distributedLongwatch Screen Shot system architecture.  This means Longwatch is scalable, reliable and able to handle various plant upsets without losing any video or losing any alarms.  Built by HMI/SCADA software industry veterans,  Longwatch brings the broadest network support in the industry, enabling you to save money by using existing infrastructure (even instrumentation networks) without creating a major impact to system performance or to IT operations.

The Version 5.0 release also includes the Longwatch Viewer, a thin-client application for Internet Explorer that provides a very flexible and powerful user interface for showing video and events.

The highlight of the June 26 release is the Longwatch Video Historian, a breakthough application that integrates your process information with on-line video for new insight and value.  The Video Historian can link information stored in a data historian with the video managed by Longwatch.  The result is a display that correlates the various pen graphs of the data historian with plant video that occurred at the same time.  Now you can see what was going on in the plant when your trends reached certain conditions!

The Video Historian also includes automatic mapping of process system messages with video.  Typical applications are correlating HMI/SCADA alarms with video, automatic video documentation of batch or workflow steps, or video linked with equipment reports.

Longwatch Version 5.0 is a modular and modern software application that enhances your process management capabilities.  Interfaced with standard camera and computer hardware, you can have new insights into your operations and start saving money fast.  Contact Insource for more information or a demonstration.  Click here for your local InSource office.

Events Module v 2.1

Events Model LogoThe InSource Solutions Events Module is an add-on application to Wonderware System Platform that captures and reports on complex events that you design. It utilizes Wonderware Historian to store events data. Design your event by browsing the Wonderware Galaxy for I/O points that are of interest, combining them into logical triggers, and then utilizing the out of the box web based reports to review and analyze the results.

With Release 2.1 InSource is pleased to announce a name change from Enterprise Events Module to simply Events       Module. And, true to the promise that since Events Module was built using the Archestra Object Toolkit, Release 2.1 has now been fully tested and is ready for deployment on Wonderware Application Server 3.1.

The latest release also sports a new licensing and pricing model that simplifies licensing and usage. Going forward Events Module licensing is based on the I/O count of the galaxy on which it is installed. There is no more dependency or limitation on object/event counts where it is used. Events Module is now available in two sizes:

  • Small Galaxy Applications I/O Count of less than 25K $3,500
  • Large Galaxy Applications I/O Count of 25K and greater $7,000

With Events Module,  you can:

  • Report on complex events that previously required scripting
  • Configure up to 5 base trigger conditions
  • Cascade event objects to build complex nested triggers
  • Drill through pareto reports to view AVG, MIN, MAX data
  • Drill through to detailed data
  • Click through to ActiveFactory® to view data in trend form
  • Automate notifications via alarms and emails
  • Monitor event status using InTouch®
  • Modify event object settings and trigger conditions using InTouch; no need to open the IDE!Events Module Graph

Importance of Monitoring Your Devices that Support Your Network

Lesia Bell--Infrastructure ExpertSCADA and HMI systems are increasingly more dependent on Ethernet based networks and subsequently it is more important that manufacturers proactively monitor the devices connected to the network.  Let’s face it; your network is only as good as the devices successfully communicating with it.  In a recent survey, InSource Solutions found that 81% of the manufacturers polled use Industrial Ethernet on their network and out of those, 3% have more than 5,000 devices on the network.  In the next 3 years, that 3% will grow to over 7%.  Based on the numbers, plant networks are becoming more important and without monitoring connected  devices, such as PLC’s and HMI’s, plants can encounter unpredictable issues:

  • Broadcast storms and excessive bandwidth consumption
  • Duplicate IP & MAC addresses
  • Cabling Problems – connector & grounding issues
  • Intermittent problems or random communication outages

Without a monitoring and diagnostic software system, problems are costly, time consuming and contribute to inefficient production caused by unscheduled stopping and starting.  On average, a single issue can cost thousands of dollars:

  • $1200 – Travel expenses for on-site expert
  • $250 – Hourly rate for on-site support (typically 8 hour minimum)
  • $1000 – Hourly downtime loss (typically more than just 1 hour!)

Most manufacturers do not want to worry about their network; they want to focus on the daily production process, generating profit and a greater return on their equity.

Consider  the fact that a typical first response  comes from a member of the maintenance or Automation Technology group, in many cases from those who are not necessarily ‘network experts’, wouldn’t it save time, hassle and stress if software were available to monitor your devices and add support, thereby arming your staff with the necessary information to pinpoint the problem?

"This past week and we had a process control network melt down. I was able to use the IntraVUE as a troubleshooting tool to get the issue isolated and ended up swapping out a bad network switch that for all intents and purposes, appeared to be operating properly from the front lights but was dropping links worse and worse. It took us only a little over an hour to get the mill back up and running," says Weyerhaeuser Company.

In addition, the new monitoring software from Network Vision proactively tells you when an issue may be developing, which allows you to schedule maintenance or troubleshooting time before an interruption in production.

"I want to send my thanks the team at Network Vision for the quick response and support of our network problem. Your ability to easily identify the issues with the switches and PLCs saved us a great deal of time and money. I really like the fact that we can email our IntraVUE files and you can remotely identify our problems off-line as if you are at the plant at the time of the disturbance. No more waiting for experts to arrive, or traditional IT service companies that have little understanding of our equipment or processes!"

Network Vision’s IntraVUE software tool does just that.  IntraVUE keeps a close eye on all your devices that communicate over Ethernet.  IntraVUE is a diagnostic package viewed through a browser or integrated with any HMI or SCADA system.  Data and events are linked into the system’s alarm program as well.  Due to the fact SCADA systems are more dependent on Ethernet communications, adding the IntraVUE package is also more popular.  IntraVUE gives the ability to identify typical plant floor problems such as, device lock-ups, misbehaving or overloaded devices, devices or connections accidentally moved, etc.  This software tool also enables the first responders to save a snapshot of the event and email to support at Network Vision or InSource Solutions for a more expert look and assistance.  This not only eases the minds of personnel, it saves time and money!

Lafarge Cement appreciates the time and money savings that this type of monitoring affords, saying "… IntraVUE just saved me an 80-mile roundtrip to the plant on a Saturday night just to change-out an Ethernet PLC module. Since I was able to quickly identify the issue by simply looking at the live IntraVUE network status I just had one of our on-site employees swap out the module."

IntraVUE’s ability to automatically discover all of the devices on the network and then automatically animate their communication path in real time is unique.  While providing a color-coded, real time view of devices and connections, IntraVUE can highlight problem areas, clearly making this software the product of choice for Industrial Ethernet applications.  Providing a visual representation allows for easier understanding of the flow of data between devices and potential problem areas.  Unlike other tools, which may have automatic discovery and then require manual mapping, or tools that provide a current view but with no trending capability, IntraVUE provides all the required components in a very easy to use package designed for the unique problems and resources of the industrial environment.  Graphical viewing provides easy comprehension of the dynamics occurring on these networks.  Allowing those first responders to troubleshoot the problem on their own quickly and easily or ask for assistance without spending a lot of time and money.

Let InSource Solutions and Network Vision put your network issues to rest.  Call today to see how quick and easy it is to save time and money and get the best return on the network investments made at your company.

Focusing on monitoring your devices also targets and identifies foreign devices gaining access on your network, infrastructure issues, and much more.  Up-front awareness of an issue helps a first responder troubleshoot the problem on their own without calling in IT Support or third party vendors.  Remote software support services provide IT & IS resources with tools that allow collaboration with the plant floor teams to reduce the burden of additional costs or delays for simple problems.  Kraft Foods recently experienced this great offline support:

Stratus Technologies Extends “No-Charge” Virtualization Program

Stratus Logo

Stratus announced on June 10, 2009 that VMware Essentials virtualization software for small and medium-size businesses will be bundled at no charge with the purchase of a Stratus® ftServer® system. The “We Feel Your Pain” program is intended to help customers make cost-effective technology investments with immediate positive impact today and lasting value.

“The negative impact of an outage can be much greater on a medium-size company than a larger enterprise because a greater percentage of its revenue, customers and employees are likely to be affected,” said Denny Lane, Stratus director of product management. “Availability concerns are no less important to mid-market companies than to the big guys. While virtualization certainly provides numerous benefits, continuous availability of key computer-based operations is available only with a fault-tolerant server host.

With measured uptime better than 99.999 percent, an ftServer system running VMware Essentials software is an infrastructure investment with unmatched reliability, flexibility and availability that can be easily upgraded. This is a  limited-time offer that ends November 25th.
